I recently had a student in my class who was, to put it mildly, abusive. He didn’t want to be there. He pressured me to skip the instruction and “just let him write the exam.” He claimed his union allowed it.
After the dust settled, I spoke with someone who knew his history. The reason other instructors let him “just write the exam”? It wasn’t because of a union rule. It was because he is so unpleasant to be around that people will do anything to get him out of the room.
This is a massive safety red flag.
When we allow someone to bypass training because they are difficult to manage, we are failing in three ways:
- We Validate the Behavior: We are teaching that person that bullying works. If you yell loud enough, the rules don’t apply to you.
- We Devalue the Room: Every other student in that class is there to learn. By letting one person “opt out” through intimidation, we tell the honest students that their time and effort don’t matter.
- The “Personality” Risk: If a student is too “unpleasant” to sit through an 8-hour safety course, how are they going to react when a CSO identifies a hazard on their site? If they can’t handle a classroom, can they handle a high-stress emergency?
In safety, character is a competency. If you lack the emotional regulation to participate in a team-based learning environment, you lack a core skill required for a safe job site.
“Just writing the exam” isn’t a shortcut; it’s a gap in the armor. We don’t waive training for the “unpleasant.” We double down on it. Because if you can’t be part of the solution in the classroom, you’re almost certainly going to be part of the problem in the field.
“Just let me write the exam. I don’t need the class.”
I heard this recently from an abusive student. He claimed it was his right. He was aggressive, disruptive, and determined to skip the “work” of learning.
Later, I found out the truth. Other trainers had let him skip the class in the past.
The reason? Not a policy. Not a union rule. They just didn’t want to deal with him. He was “too unpleasant.”
We need to stop paying the “Jerk Tax” in safety training.
When we let a bully bypass standards just to get them out of our hair, we are exporting a hazard to the job site.
- If they won’t listen to an instructor, will they listen to a Safety Officer?
- If they can’t handle a classroom, how will they handle a high-pressure site?
- If they don’t respect the process, do they respect the lives of their coworkers?
Safety training isn’t just about checking a box on an exam. It’s about building a collective culture of competence. When we allow the “path of least resistance” to dictate who gets a certificate, we aren’t being “nice”—we’re being dangerous.
Character is a safety requirement. No exceptions.
